We, the undersigned students and Alumni of proprietary colleges and universities, value our education just like students of traditional two and four year colleges and universities. However, our experience is not the same. As single mothers, veterans, and adult students who work full time while attending school, we value the flexibility, small classroom settings, and career-focused learning offered by career colleges that allow us to achieve success and meet our specific professional career goals.

Not all Members of Congress value our education as much as we do. In fact, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) says on his own website, “for profit colleges view their students as no more than cogs in their profit making machine, with little concern for their education or success.”

Senator Harkin, we beg to differ.

As students and alumni of proprietary colleges and universities, we chose our schools with eyes open and we are proud of our accomplishments. To denigrate our schools is to devalue the education we have worked hard to obtain.

As students of proprietary colleges and universities, we support the right of all students to make choices about the institutions of higher learning that are the best fit for them. As students of the proprietary colleges and universities, we want Congress to support our right to educational choice as ardently and vociferously as we do.
